Fiji Schools Face a Crisis: Is Holistic Education the Solution?

Fiji’s schools are grappling with serious challenges such as substance abuse, violence, and negative influences, which have necessitated a call for a more comprehensive approach to education. At the biennial conference of the School Management Association of Fiji in Nausori, President Govind Singh highlighted the urgent need to develop a curriculum that fosters character building among students. He emphasized that simply addressing these issues is not solely the responsibility of teachers; it requires community involvement.

Singh pointed out the unique situation in Fiji, where more than 90 percent of schools are operated by faith-based organizations. This creates an opportunity for local communities to engage more meaningfully in the education process. To combat rising concerns about drug use among students, he stressed the importance of collaborative efforts that involve parents, teachers, and the wider community.

Despite recognizing the challenges, Singh voiced optimism for change, referencing the People’s Coalition Government’s promises to establish structures for effective community engagement in school governance. He expressed disappointment that these promised structures are still not fully developed and called for the revival of the Education Forum to enhance stakeholders’ collaboration in addressing these pressing issues.

In conclusion, while the situation surrounding drugs and violence in schools is dire, there is hope that with a renewed focus on holistic education and community collaboration, positive change can be achieved. By working together, Fiji can cultivate a supportive environment that not only addresses immediate problems but also nurtures the growth and development of its youth.
