Twelve schools in Fiji are set to launch a new Chinese language program following a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Education and the Chinese government. This initiative, approved by Cabinet in August 2024, aims to integrate the Chinese language into Fiji’s school curriculum, highlighting the growing relationship between Fiji and China.

Fiji’s Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, emphasized the significance of this program, stating that understanding the Chinese language could greatly benefit students and teachers by facilitating trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. The collaboration involves China providing high-quality support to the Ministry of Education (MOE) for program implementation, which includes teacher training, resource allocation, and planning.

Additionally, China will offer a pool of Chinese language teachers, including volunteers, to assist in remote learning opportunities for students. Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that it would create new avenues for local students and teachers, enhancing their understanding of a language that is pivotal for international communication and is taught globally in over 190 countries.

Zhou also reaffirmed the Chinese embassy’s commitment to fostering educational exchanges and providing scholarships for Fijian youths to study in China, aiming to support the development of a skilled workforce in Fiji. This initiative not only strengthens bilateral ties but also opens up avenues for cultural exchange and mutual understanding, contributing to an enriching educational environment in Fiji.

Overall, this new Chinese language program represents a significant step forward in Fiji’s educational landscape and international collaboration, fostering a spirit of friendship and partnership between Fiji and China.
