Fiji Schools Could Soon Lift Weightlifting Dreams

Discussions are underway to introduce weightlifting in schools starting next year, as confirmed by Fiji Weightlifting president Della Shaw-Elder. Elder stated, “It’s in the early stages of discussion, and we want to start with just a few pilot schools to evaluate the process.” She emphasized the importance of careful implementation due to safety concerns related to strength and conditioning.

Elder expressed enthusiasm about this initiative and noted that a proposal for a high-performance center was submitted to the government in 2019. Recently, they received communication regarding the location for the center, with confirmation pending.

The establishment of a weightlifting fitness center is expected to elevate the sport’s profile in Fiji. Elder highlighted the promising future of weightlifting, pointing out that the oldest athlete in their group is 26 years old, with younger athletes following.

Fiji has also achieved success in recent competitions, winning a youth bronze medal in the women’s 59kg and men’s 81kg categories. Elder mentioned that these results help gauge their performance as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games in 2026. She acknowledged the dominance of Indian competitors in the event and encouraged the Indo-Fijian community to support the athletes.

Fiji weightlifters are set to continue competing over the next two days.
