Marist Brothers High School (MBHS) and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School each defended their titles during the 2025 Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association Fiji Finals, showcasing remarkable athletic talent. In the boys’ division, MBHS secured the championship with an impressive medal tally of 12 gold, 9 silver, and 9 bronze medals. Suva Grammar School and Queen Victoria School followed closely behind in second and third respectively, with 7 gold, 10 silver, and 9 bronze, and 6 gold, 7 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
The head coach of MBHS, Antonio Rabuiliku, emphasized the team’s strategic focus on field events, which he considered crucial for their successful title defense. “We knew it was going to be haywire on the tracks, so we focused our attention on the field,” Rabuiliku noted, highlighting the effectiveness of their approach.
MGM triumphed in the girls’ division, amassing an impressive 20 gold, 8 silver, and 5 bronze medals. Adi Cakobau School (ACS) and Natabua High School secured the second and third positions with 6 gold, 9 silver, and 8 bronze, and 6 gold, 1 silver, and 7 bronze medals, respectively. MGM’s head coach, Waliki Satakala, expressed pride in the back-to-back titles, calling the experience a “first-time feeling” for the school.
Exceptional performances were recognized with awards; MBHS’s Kirikiti Biu was named Best Male Athlete, following a strong showing in the sprint events, while MGM’s Gladness Simpson secured the Best Female Athlete award, showcasing her talent in multiple middle-distance races.
This weekend not only celebrated athletic achievements but also fostered a sense of community among competitors and supporters, reflecting the growth of athletics in Fiji. As both schools continue to nurture young talents and strive for excellence, there remains great anticipation for their future performances in upcoming competitions, promising a bright future for sports in the region.
