Fiji Schoolboys Shine in Victory Against Australia!

The head coach of the Fiji Schoolboys under-18 team, Peniona Ranitu, expressed his confidence in the talented players being prepared to represent the nation in future competitions following their impressive 26-14 victory over the Australian Schoolboys in the first Test match at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

The Fijian team started strong, with center Maleli Nauvasi scoring a try in the ninth minute, establishing an early lead. Anare Tabakaucoro successfully converted, giving Fiji a 7-0 advantage.

The momentum continued as openside flanker Samuela Tuidraki scored a second try in the 16th minute, assisted by Nauvasi, and Tabakaucoro added the conversion for a 14-0 lead. Despite an answer from Australia, with winger Max Roach scoring a try in the 28th minute and Cooper Watters converting, narrowing the gap to 14-7, Fiji demonstrated resilience.

The first half proved challenging for Fiji as they faced two yellow cards, with Nathan Stephens and Samuela Tuidraki Jr sent off at critical moments. Nonetheless, Fiji regrouped and opened the second half strong, with winger Duacake Vulainabuwaha scoring a try in the 36th minute, extending their lead to 19-7.

Australia fought back with a try from Jai Callaghan in the 59th minute, converted by Watters, bringing the score to 19-14 and intensifying the match. In a pivotal moment, Fiji capitalized on a turnover in the 70th minute, with Meli Waqairadovu scoring a try, and Isikeli Bari adding the conversion to secure a 26-14 victory for Fiji.

Coach Ranitu commended the team for their ability to seize opportunities and perform in their unique Fijian style, attributing their success to the players’ hard work and dedication on the field. He encouraged fans, especially parents and guardians, to support the young talents being developed within the team.

The two teams are set to meet again tomorrow at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
