Fiji schoolboys head coach Peniona Ranitu is set to embark on his first national assignment today as his team prepares to face the Australia schoolboys in a highly anticipated match at Lawaqa Park. The game, scheduled to kick off at 6 pm tonight, promises to be a hard-fought battle.
Having recently led Lautoka Rugby this season, Ranitu received his first call-up to national coaching after showcasing his leadership and tactical skills in the domestic league. This marks a significant milestone in his coaching career as he steps onto the international stage, tasked with guiding the nation’s top schoolboy talents.
“It will be a huge challenge for me, coming from domestic competition to my first national job,” Ranitu acknowledged. “However, these boys are very disciplined, and that will be our strength when we face Australia.”
Ranitu has emphasized the importance of creating a cohesive team, highlighting discipline both on and off the field. With limited preparation time, he believes the team’s strong work ethic and commitment will be vital when confronting the tougher Australian side, known for its physical play and tactical expertise.
“We have worked hard on maintaining structure and unity, and I believe that will help us stay composed in the heat of the game,” he stated. “Australia will be tough, but we are ready for the challenge.”
For today’s match, Ranitu has announced a robust 23-member squad. The forward pack will feature Rupeni Nuinui as loosehead prop, with Waisake Vakacere at hooker and Raymond Navunikaba at tighthead prop. Sosiceni Waqa and Saimoni Vaisova will lock the scrum in the second-row, while Isoa Koroinawai, Samuela Tuidraki, and Sireli Nete complete the loose forward trio.
The backline will be led by the Queen Victoria School Deans U18 championship-winning halfbacks, with Meli Waqairadovu at scrumhalf and Anare Tabakaucoro at fly-half. The centers will be Joji Rakaba and Maleli Nauvasi, while Duacake Vulainabuwaha and Nathan Stephens will occupy the wings, with Josaia Ralulu positioned at fullback.
