Fiji police are currently investigating the source of a leaked explicit video involving former cabinet minister Lynda Tabuya. Tabuya, who previously held the role of minister for women, children, and social protection, has filed a formal complaint with the police cybercrime unit, asserting that the distribution of the video constitutes a severe case of cyberbullying.
The video, which has attracted significant attention and gone viral, led Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to dismiss Tabuya from her ministerial position, labeling the action as necessary for the public good. The content of the clip has sparked outrage and controversy among the public.
Tabuya has condemned the leak as an example of gender-based violence, highlighting that many women in Fiji, approximately two-thirds, face similar online threats. Deputy police commissioner of operations, Livai Driu, reiterated the seriousness of cyberbullying as both a legal issue and a matter of human rights, stressing that those responsible for circulating the video will be held accountable. He also noted that the investigation will be conducted fairly, without any preferential treatment, regardless of Tabuya’s political status.
Although Tabuya has been removed from the Cabinet, she remains a Member of Parliament, despite growing calls for her resignation due to the controversy surrounding the incident. Her assistant minister, Sashi Kiran, has taken over her former responsibilities.
