Fiji Sailing Weekend Brings National Championships and World Sailing Judges Clinic

During the Fiji Day long weekend, the Fiji Yachting Association collaborated with the Savusavu Yacht & Sailing Club to host the 2025 Fiji National Sailing Championships, combined with a World Sailing Judges Clinic. This three-day event was a melting pot of sailors, officials, and volunteers from across the nation, blending competitive spirit with skill enhancement to bolster the local sailing community.

The World Sailing Judges Clinic, led by International Judge and Umpire Damien Boldyrew, received financial backing from the Fiji National Sports Commission, World Sailing, and the Fiji Yachting Association itself. A total of sixteen participants from Fiji and neighboring regions attended, gaining essential insights into international race management and officiating standards, which they later applied during the live races at the championships. This educational aspect of the event aimed to elevate officiating standards and foster greater consistency among local sailing clubs, enhancing regional collaboration and paving a clear pathway for prospective Pacific race officials.

The competitive side of the championships featured 51 sailors aged between 8 and 69 competing in various classes, including Optimist, Laser, and Windsurfer LT. Among them, standout performances were recognized, with Josua Dimuri winning in the Optimist Green Fleet, Carlie Brodie in the Optimist Open, William Moffat in the Laser ILCA 6/7, and Andrew Rhodes triumphing in the Windsurfer LT category.

The event’s success owes much to the unwavering support of volunteers and generous sponsorship from organizations such as Fiji Tourism, Tradewinds Marine Group, and Vuda Marina. It exemplifies the vibrant spirit and dedication within Fiji’s sailing community to nurture talent and foster a deeper connection with the sport.

Moreover, Fiji’s presence on the international sailing stage continues to grow, as exemplified by four young sailors from Fiji who recently participated in the 2025 Misto Australian Optimist Dinghy Championship in Brisbane. Their selection for this competition highlighted Fiji’s emerging talent and the increasing recognition of the nation’s sailing prowess. These intersections of local and international competitions signify not only a promising future for Fiji’s sailors but also inspire younger generations to engage with sailing, reinforcing the idea that sport can unite and invigorate communities.

The recent successes and ongoing events in Fiji’s sailing realm signal a hopeful and thriving future for the sport within the nation, encouraging widespread participation and interest.
