As December unfolds, Fiji is in high spirits, buoyed by the stunning success of our men’s rugby sevens team at the Dubai 7s tournament over the weekend. After an exhausting stretch of 22 tournaments without a victory, Fiji clinched a decisive 19-5 win against Spain, rekindling national pride and passion for rugby.

Under the guidance of coach Osea Kolinisau, who took over from Ben Gollings six months ago, the team showcased an extraordinary blend of dedication, teamwork, and the unique Fijian style that has long characterized our rugby legacy. This triumph transcends mere sport; it serves as a unifying force for the nation, resonating from the busy streets to the halls of Parliament, embodying the joy and pride so integral to the Fijian identity.

Kolinisau’s leadership prompts a strong reminder to our leaders and rugby officials: Fijians are capable of steering our teams to success. This victory challenges the traditional reliance on expatriate coaches, calling for recognition of the abundant talent and expertise present within our own community. The results of the Fiji team, coached by a local, offer compelling support for the government’s ongoing ‘Fijian Made’ initiative; if rugby powerhouses like New Zealand, England, and South Africa can thrive under the guidance of their own former players, why can’t Fiji do the same?

Rugby sevens presents a significant opportunity for many Fijian athletes, leading to prosperous careers and substantially contributing to our economy. The legacy of our rugby icons serves as a constant reminder of the potential that thrives in our own ranks. Notable players-turned-coaches, like Waisale Serevi and the late Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese, have demonstrated that no one understands a Fijian player better than another Fijian.

Reflecting on this journey, we remember Pio ‘Off-load’ King Tuwai, who encouraged patience and trust in the team, stating, “have faith … sekodi, sekodi boto o Viti (Just give Fiji seconds) …have faith koto (always have faith).” His steadfast belief was rewarded as the team triumphed over formidable opponents, highlighting the importance of resilience and faith within our sporting landscape.

This victory in the Dubai 7s marks a significant milestone as Fiji embarks on the 2024/25 HSBC Sevens Series, rekindling aspirations to reclaim our position as champions of 7s rugby. After nine long years since our last win in Dubai in 2015, this achievement signals the revival of our pursuit of excellence.

As we celebrate this hard-won victory, let’s honor not only the achievement but also the unwavering spirit of our rugby-enthusiastic nation. This is indeed a time for joy, reminding us that with commitment, unity, and belief, Fiji Rugby is back on the path to greatness. Let us come together to support our team as they prepare for their next challenge in Cape Town, optimistic that this victory is merely the beginning of a promising new chapter in our rugby history.

In summary, Fiji’s recent victory in the Dubai 7s is not just a sporting milestone; it represents hope, unity, and a renewed faith in the capabilities of our local talent. With a local coach at the helm, Fiji Rugby is poised for a bright future.
