The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is under pressure to develop a solid business plan that will support the Flying Fijians in their quest for a Rugby World Cup title. John Sanday, chairman of the Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), shared these insights in an exclusive interview with FijiNikua magazine. Highlighting the squad’s historical achievements in reaching the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals with limited resources, Sanday emphasized that Fiji benefits from an abundance of talent, combined with the team’s dedication and physical prowess.
In his conversation, Sanday reiterated, “Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup,” stressing the necessity to transition from minimal, makeshift resources to a well-established financial foundation critical for success. The chairman aims to stabilize FRU’s finances, optimize its structure, and enhance governance, focusing on a strategic work agenda to boost revenue.
To facilitate these plans, he announced the formation of board sub-committees that will oversee specific projects approved for action, with details expected to be revealed by early 2025. Sanday also expressed the intention to bring in external talent to enrich these committees.
In response to media queries, Sanday acknowledged the need for a rugby players’ association in Fiji. This new body will represent players’ interests and is set to include a nominated member on the FRU board, facilitating better communication and understanding of player needs.
Furthermore, Sanday indicated that a comprehensive review of FRU staff and its organizational structure will take place to ensure that they meet the evolving demands of the sport globally. This evaluation aims to align current capabilities with the skills required to elevate Fiji Rugby to a tier-one status.
