Fiji Rugby’s Rising Star: Sikeli Basiyalo Joins Sevens Squad!

Sikeli Basiyalo, a promising 21-year-old rugby player from Fiji, has been unexpectedly called up to join the Fiji men’s rugby sevens training squad, sparking excitement in both him and his supporters. Currently a member of the Fijian Drua development squad, Basiyalo received this news from Drua head coach Glen Jackson, who relayed that Fiji’s sevens coach Osea Kolinisau sought to include him in the team.

Delighted with the news, Basiyalo shared his enthusiasm, stating, “Happy to be part of the sevens team—it’s going well.” He acknowledged the significant difference between the pace of sevens rugby and his usual gameplay, expressing that he found it a challenge but is eager to embrace it. The fast tempo of the game was initially hard to believe for him, but he is determined to seize this unexpected opportunity.

Teaming up with Basiyalo in the training squad is his fellow Drua player Aisea Nawai. Both are looking forward to learning from the experienced sevens squad as they prepare for the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens tournament. Basiyalo aims to soak up as much knowledge as possible during this training, with the goal of using it to enhance his performance back with the Drua.

The timing of their inclusion is strategic as Fiji gears up for the Hong Kong Sevens, focusing on integrating young talent into the squad. Osea Kolinisau has emphasized that selection is competitive, highlighting the importance of teamwork and synergy.

This development marks a significant milestone for Basiyalo and underscores Fiji’s strong commitment to fostering young talent in rugby, ensuring the sport’s continued growth in the region. As fans eagerly anticipate the performances of these emerging players, there is hope for a successful showing at the upcoming tournament.
