Fiji Rugby’s Registration Challenge: Solutions in Progress

One of the key topics discussed at the recent Special General Meeting of the Fiji Rugby Union was the issue of player registration, a matter that has proven to be more complicated in Fiji than it should be. Following recent developments, Vatukoula has been promoted to the Skipper Cup after successfully appealing a decision involving Namosi, who fielded a player registered with Suva in the promotion playoffs.

In a previous instance, Ba had their own appeal against Vatukoula rejected due to complications surrounding a player who was playing for both Vatutavui Village and a club in Vatukoula. To address these complications, the Fiji Rugby Union is working on creating a comprehensive database that will ensure proper registration of all players in the country. This initiative aims to streamline the protest processes which currently consume valuable time and resources.

Ba Rugby Union Secretary Gaby Kautoga expressed concerns about the administrative workload resulting from ongoing club protests, indicating that the focus should shift towards player development rather than resolving disputes. To tackle this issue, the Ba Rugby Union has proposed registering every player, referee, medic, and coach involved in their activities, providing them with photo ID cards for easy identification. This registry is expected to bring additional benefits like insurance for players and privileges within the club.

One significant recommendation from the Fiji Rugby Union was the registration of all 7s teams as club entities under provincial unions, ensuring players are only fielded from registered clubs. However, Kautoga noted that this could be more challenging due to the traditional structure of 7s rugby in Fiji, which allows free movement among players. He highlighted recent successes, such as Ba players contributing to the victorious Devo Babas team in the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s tournament, emphasizing that such participation can lead to valuable experiences and opportunities for players.

In a hopeful perspective, while the registration process is multifaceted and requires time and effort, these developments could result in improved organization within Fiji rugby, ultimately fostering stronger player development and increased opportunities for talent to shine on larger platforms. The shift towards better administration in sports will not only enhance competitiveness but also create lasting legacies for future generations in Fiji rugby.
