Fiji Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has called upon all Fijian rugby players to elevate their game as the nation joins the ranks of tier-one rugby countries. This transition marks a significant milestone for Fijian rugby, highlighted by their upcoming participation in the Nations Cup next year, which will position the Flying Fijians alongside some of the most formidable teams in the world.

Byrne stressed the importance of raising the standards of performance both on the field and within organizational structures. “We now need to step up as an organization, as a group of players. We now need to address the fact that we are now tier one, and everything that we’re doing as an organization and as a group must reflect that,” he stated. This calls for enhanced professionalism across all levels of the sport, from grassroots initiatives to the national setup.

Part of this commitment to improvement includes boosting infrastructure and developing player pathways to ensure continuous competitiveness. Byrne noted the importance of two key upcoming test matches against the Wallabies on July 6 in Newcastle, Australia, and Scotland on July 12 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, as these will serve as essential preparation ahead of their Nations Cup debut.

Reflecting on past performances, the Flying Fijians recorded an impressive seven wins out of ten Test matches this year, demonstrating significant progress. Competing against top-tier nations such as New Zealand, Ireland, and Scotland has provided valuable insights into areas for growth. Byrne emphasized that these matches are vital for building the team’s future and elevating their game intensity.

The anticipation surrounding Fiji’s increasing involvement in international rugby is palpable. With the prospect of competing in the 2026 Nations Cup on the horizon, Byrne believes that these engagements will be crucial for the team to narrow the gap and strive for success on the global stage.

As the Flying Fijians prepare for their upcoming challenges, there is a strong sense of hope and excitement within the rugby community. With concerted efforts and the right support, Fiji Rugby is poised for promising advancements in the international arena.
