The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU), in collaboration with the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and the Ministry of Education, has established an interim committee to oversee the management of the significant Vodafone Deans and Weet-Bix Raluve competitions for secondary schools. This move follows extensive discussions aimed at resolving earlier administrative issues and aligning the competitions with national governance frameworks and World Rugby’s best practices.
FSSRU’s vice-president for development, Biu Colati, emphasized that forming this committee represents a positive step forward, noting, “For us, it was an internal issue that led to what we are doing now.” The committee’s formation marks a fresh start for the involved parties, aiming to foster better cooperation and governance in Fiji’s school rugby scene.
The acting CEO of the FRU, Koli Sewabu, reiterated the importance of this agreement, stating that it includes governance reforms and a complete review of the competition format. He expressed commitment to enhancing the operational structure for the upcoming seasons, specifically looking to ensure the alignment of competitional regulations with broader organizational goals leading to 2025 and beyond.
The establishment of the interim committee signals a promising development for local rugby, with hopes that it will lead to improved transparency, collaboration, and an environment that prioritizes the welfare and development of student-athletes. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to modernize and strengthen the governance of rugby in Fiji, fostering optimism for a successful season ahead filled with competitive spirit and community support.
As schools gear up to participate, there is a shared excitement about showcasing young talent and nurturing the next generation of rugby stars within the vibrant landscape of Fiji’s sporting culture.
