Fiji Rugby has recently appointed Ioan Cunningham, the former head coach of the Wales Women’s rugby team, to lead the Vodafone Fijiana XV as they prepare for the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup. This decision follows the resignation of Mosese Rauluni, who stepped down after a challenging period for the team, notably finishing fourth in the WXV 3 tournament.
Cunningham brings a wealth of coaching experience, having led the Welsh women’s and U20 teams through significant tournaments, and his tenure included notable achievements like guiding the Welsh team to its first-ever victory over Australia and reaching a third-place finish in the Six Nations. His role as Forwards Coach at Scarlets, where he contributed to successful campaigns in the European Challenge Cup and the Heineken Champions Cup, underlines his strategic capabilities.
As the Fijiana prepare to compete against strong Northern Hemisphere teams, Cunningham’s insights into their playing styles and innovative game plans are expected to enhance the team’s competitiveness. He expressed his enthusiasm for this new role, stating, “I am very excited to work with this group of athletes and staff. The potential of this group is huge, and I look forward to unlocking the talent within this team.”
Fiji Rugby CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu is upbeat about Cunningham’s appointment, citing his international experience as a crucial factor in steering the team towards success in the upcoming World Cup, which will take place from August 22 to September 27 in England. The Fijiana XV will be competing in Pool B against formidable opponents such as Canada, Scotland, and Wales.
This leadership transition marks a hope-filled new chapter for the Fijiana XV, as they aim to capitalize on their previous experiences and strive for excellence on the international rugby stage. Under Cunningham’s guidance, the team is expected to embrace their potential and make a significant impact at the World Cup. The upcoming tournament could see the Fijiana XV turn a corner and showcase the depth of talent in Fiji’s women’s rugby.
