Fiji Rugby has appointed Ioan Cunningham, the former head coach of the Wales Women’s rugby team, to steers the Vodafone Fijiana XV in their upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup campaign. Cunningham brings extensive experience, having previously coached both the Wales Women’s and U20 teams through various significant tournaments. His role as Forwards Coach for Scarlets has further enriched his coaching arsenal, contributing to the team’s successful campaigns in the European Challenge Cup and the Heineken Champions Cup.
With his deep understanding of the Northern Hemisphere teams’ playing styles, Cunningham’s strategic insights are expected to enhance the Fijiana’s competitiveness as they face strong opponents in the group stage. He expressed excitement about working with the talented athletes and staff, stating, “The potential of this group is huge… it is a very important year in women’s rugby, and I look forward to unlocking the talent within this team.” This enthusiasm is shared by Fiji Rugby’s CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu, who has confidence in Cunningham’s ability to lead the team effectively.
The Fijiana XV, drawn into a challenging Pool B that includes Canada, Scotland, and Wales, is poised for a hopeful turning point as they embark on this journey. With the World Cup scheduled from August 22 to September 27 in England, there is an air of optimism regarding their potential to leave a mark on the tournament.
Cunningham’s appointment follows the resignation of Mosese Rauluni, who faced challenges that impacted the team’s performance, culminating in a fourth-place finish in the WXV 3 tournament. This transition signifies a fresh opportunity for the Fijiana XV to build on their previous experiences, embody the spirit of Fiji, and achieve new heights in women’s rugby.
Overall, the arrival of Cunningham reflects a strategic advancement for Fiji Rugby and serves as a beacon of hope for the Fijiana XV as they aim for excellence on the international rugby stage.
