The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is set to focus on creating a solid business framework to enhance the Flying Fijians’ chances of clinching a Rugby World Cup title. John Sanday, chairman of the Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), shared these plans during an interview with FijiNikua magazine. Sanday, who once played for the Flying Fijians in their inaugural World Cup quarterfinal, emphasized that despite limited resources, Fiji’s national XV team has made impressive progress in the tournament, reaching the quarterfinals three times solely through talent, dedication, and a strong passion for the sport.

“We aim to win the Rugby World Cup,” Sanday stated, highlighting the need to transition from relying on minimal resources to establishing a robust business foundation for success. His focus is on stabilizing the FRU’s finances, reinforcing governance, and devising a strategy that can boost revenue streams. To support this initiative, board sub-committees will be formed to carry out specific projects, with an official announcement expected in early 2025.

Sanday also acknowledged the necessity of a rugby players’ association, which will represent the interests of players, ultimately leading to improved outcomes. This association will have a member nominated to join the FRU’s board, ensuring player voices are heard. Additionally, a comprehensive review of the staff and structure of the FRU will be conducted to align with international standards and elevate Fiji Rugby to tier one status.

This ambitious project aims to lay the groundwork to transform Fijian rugby into a powerhouse on the global stage while ensuring that player welfare and governance receive necessary attention. The focus on a sound financial strategy and player representation exemplifies a commitment to building a sustainable future for rugby in Fiji.

Overall, the FRU’s proactive approach towards restructuring and enhancing its operational capabilities offers a hopeful perspective for the future of Fijian rugby, fostering an environment that nurtures talent and potential for a World Cup victory.
