Fiji Rugby’s Future: Patience and Promising Talent Ahead!

Fiji rugby is currently experiencing an exciting phase in its development, according to the head coach of the FIJI Water Flying Fijians, Mick Byrne. Following the Vodafone Super Deans tournament last weekend, which showcased thrilling matches in the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals, Byrne emphasized the importance of patience and ongoing growth in nurturing player talent for the future.

Byrne reflected on the semi-final matchups involving Cuvu College against Nasinu Secondary School and Queen Victoria School versus Ratu Navula College, expressing optimism that the players from these schools would prove to be exceptional prospects for Fiji rugby with time, development, and patience. He noted, “Some of those young men are just unbelievable,” suggesting that their potential is significant.

He acknowledged that the under-20 team did not achieve the expected success this year but remained hopeful about the future. Byrne highlighted that the current Deans competition indicates that in two years, the under-20 team will be markedly stronger, thanks to the talent pool represented by these four schools.

Some players from the tournament have already caught the attention of scouts and may join the Fijian Drua Academy or its development squad. Byrne praised the efforts of the Drua, stating, “They have done a great job working with Fiji Rugby,” and noted that the establishment of an academy level is a positive step for the sport in the country.

The challenge remains that many promising players often leave Fiji for opportunities abroad at ages 18 and 19, typically after completing their school years. Byrne stressed the importance of keeping this talent on the island to ensure they are available for national representation.

Notably, players from Lami High School’s under-19 team, such as number eight Isoa Laulaba and fullback Ro Mocelutu Macanawai, have been approached for the Fijian Drua development squad, marking a significant step in securing local talent for the future of Fiji rugby.
