Today marks a pivotal moment for Fiji Rugby as the future direction of the sport could be solidified during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Grand Pacific Hotel. A remarkable 25 candidates are vying for seven positions on the Board of Directors, signaling a strong interest in shaping the governance of Fiji rugby.
Jeremy Duxbury, Treasurer of Ba Rugby, expressed surprise at the high number of candidates, noting that in his 25 years with the sport, he has never seen such enthusiastic participation. While the array of experienced candidates is encouraging, it also reflects the growing concerns among provincial unions regarding the trajectory of Fiji Rugby.
Following the resignation of the previous Board of Directors in April 2023, the ongoing management of rugby affairs has been overseen by five government-appointed Interim Trustees. Among the candidates, two from the commercial sector have been nominated: Mark Evans, CEO of Drua, and Semi Lotawa, Head of Philanthropy at Fiji Water. Gaby Kautoga, Secretary of Ba Rugby, emphasized the importance of selecting Directors who not only have a robust rugby background but also expertise in business, noting the complementary skills that Evans and Lotawa bring.
Ba Rugby’s nominations also include Vilimoni Delasau for one of the Rugby Director roles and Ana Tuiketei for Legal Director. Delasau is recognized for his impressive professional career, including winning a gold medal at the World Cup 7s, while Tuiketei has garnered praise for her engagement with provincial members and her extensive legal experience in rugby.
Additionally, Ba Rugby is looking for resolutions on the 2025 playing season and the freedom for member unions to select their own uniform manufacturers. Kautoga stated that while some motions have been postponed until the Special General Meeting in December, there is a strong desire to move forward decisively.
This substantial participation in the election process demonstrates a collective commitment to enhancing Fiji Rugby’s future, stirring optimism among stakeholders. The forthcoming Board could invigorate the sport and address the pressing challenges faced by provincial unions, setting a positive trajectory for Fiji Rugby’s evolution.
Overall, the potential of elected officials with varied expertise promises a renewed focus that could lead to substantial growth and development within Fiji Rugby, creating an environment that fosters both competitive excellence and community involvement.
