Fiji Rugby’s Future: Exciting Prospects Await!

Fiji rugby is currently at a pivotal stage in its development, according to FIJI Water Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne. After observing the recent Vodafone Super Deans tournament, which included the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals, Byrne expressed optimism about the future of rugby in Fiji while emphasizing the importance of patience in player development.

Byrne highlighted the semi-finals featuring Cuvu College versus Nasinu Secondary School and Queen Victoria School against Ratu Navula College, noting that with time, growth, and patience, these young talents will soon become significant contributors to Fijian rugby.

“Some of those young men are just unbelievable,” he remarked, acknowledging that the under-20 team faced challenges this year but remains hopeful for the future based on the emerging talent showcased in the Deans tournament.

Several standout players have already been identified for recruitment into the Fijian Drua Academy and the development squad. Byrne praised the Drua’s efforts in fostering young talent, stating that the establishment of an academy framework is a positive development for Fiji rugby.

He pointed out a critical issue facing rising rugby stars in Fiji, where many players leave for opportunities abroad at ages 18 and 19, often right after their Deans competition or during their final school year. “If we can retain some of that talent on the island through the academy process in the Drua program, they will be available for Fiji,” he emphasized.

Among those being scouted are Lami High School U19 players, including number eight Isoa Laulaba and fullback Ro Mocelutu Macanawai, who have been approached to join the Fijian Drua development squad.
