Fiji Rugby’s Bold Stance: No Bonuses for Wins This November Tour

The Flying Fijians rugby team will not receive any bonuses for match victories during their upcoming November tour, as confirmed by Peter Mazey, the interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). This decision follows a request from one player through the players’ welfare association advocating for bonus payments.

Mazey stated that the union will not support bonus payments at this time, indicating a need for fiscal responsibility. He emphasized that with the significant costs incurred during the Rugby World Cup—approximately $11 million, with a third of that allocated to player expenses—the union must prioritize sustainable financial practices. He expressed a belief that players should focus on representing their country rather than seeking personal financial gain.

Additionally, FRU board member Jenny See-to clarified that bonuses typically originate from government funding rather than the union’s own finances. She noted that the union does not have the capacity to cover such payments independently.

While the immediate outlook may seem discouraging for players hoping for extra incentives, it presents an opportunity for the team to unite and focus on their foundational goal: representing Fiji with pride and integrity. This emphasis on team spirit and national pride might strengthen their resolve on the field, potentially elevating their performance during the November tour.

In summary, although no bonuses will be provided for match wins, the emphasis on unity and national representation may foster a strong team culture and drive the Flying Fijians to give their best in upcoming matches.
