The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is in the process of formulating a strategic business plan aimed at leading the Flying Fijians to success in future Rugby World Cups. During an interview with FijiNikua magazine, chairman of Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), John Sanday, emphasized the need for solid financial foundations to support the national team’s ambitions.
Sanday highlighted that despite limited resources, Fiji’s national rugby team has reached the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup three times, showcasing the wealth of talent and dedication among the players. Having been part of Fiji’s first World Cup quarterfinal team, Sanday remarked that the players relied on their natural ability, fitness, and passion for their country.
“Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup,” Sanday stated, stressing the importance of transitioning from basic operational resources to a more structured business model. This structure aims to stabilize FRU’s finances, enhance governance, and develop a strategic agenda to increase revenue.
To facilitate this transition, Sanday plans to establish specialized board sub-committees dedicated to managing specific projects approved for implementation, with announcements to come in early 2025. One key initiative will be the formation of a Fiji Rugby Players Association to represent players’ interests and improve overall outcomes. This association is expected to incorporate a nominee as a member of the board.
Additionally, Sanday indicated a forthcoming review of FRU’s staff and organizational structure to ensure alignment with global standards in rugby, ultimately aiming for Fiji Rugby to reach a tier-one level in the sport.
Fiji Rugby’s journey toward World Cup success is underway, fueled by strategic planning and community involvement. The establishment of a Rugby Players Association and a solid business structure are promising steps toward a more prosperous future for Fiji Rugby.
