The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is being urged to develop a robust business plan to enhance the prospects of the Flying Fijians winning a Rugby World Cup title. During an interview with FijiNikua magazine, John Sanday, chairman of the Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), pointed out that despite limited resources, Fiji has shown immense talent, having reached the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals three times.

Reflecting on his experiences as a member of the Flying Fijian team that reached the nation’s first World Cup quarterfinal, Sanday emphasized the combination of talent, fitness, grit, and passion for Fiji as fundamental strengths. He expressed a clear vision: “Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup.”

He underscored the urgent need to transition from minimal resources to establishing a firm financial foundation that would support their World Cup aspirations. “The main thing for me is to stabilize the finances of FRU, right-size it, strengthen governance, whilst also building a work agenda that can increase the revenue streams for FRU,” Sanday stated. He believes that a return to basics from a corporate perspective is essential to achieve these goals.

To facilitate this, Sanday revealed plans to set up board sub-committees to manage specific projects, which will be announced in early 2025. He aims to involve knowledgeable individuals from outside the organization to strengthen these efforts. His initial focus involves expanding revenue sources and initiating capital projects.

Sanday also acknowledged the importance of establishing a rugby players’ association to advocate for player interests and improve organizational outcomes. It is anticipated that this association will further enhance communication with the FRU, with provisions for a nominee from this group to join the board.

Furthermore, Sanday mentioned that the FRU board would review its staffing and structure to ensure alignment with global rugby changes, aiming to elevate Fiji Rugby’s status to tier one.

As the Fiji Rugby Union embarks on this transformative journey, there is a sense of optimism that with strategic planning and dedication, the ultimate dream of winning a Rugby World Cup is within reach. This commitment not only aims to enhance the sport in Fiji but also fosters a greater appreciation and development of rugby talent throughout the country.

Overall, the future appears promising as the FRU sets its sights on solidifying its foundations and paving the way for success on the international stage.
