The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is embarking on a significant initiative to develop a robust business plan focused on ultimately securing a Rugby World Cup title for the Flying Fijians team. John Sanday, chairman of Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), emphasized the necessity for a structured financial strategy in a recent interview with FijiNIKUA magazine. FRFUL operates as the commercial branch of the FRU.
During the interview, Sanday shared insights from his experiences, highlighting that despite limited resources, Fiji’s national XV team successfully reached the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals three times, primarily relying on talent, fitness, and a deep passion for their country.
“To achieve our ultimate goal of winning the Rugby World Cup, we need to transition from basic resource management to establishing a solid corporate foundation,” Sanday stated. A key priority moving forward will be stabilizing the finances of FRU, optimizing its operations, enhancing governance, and developing a dynamic agenda to expand revenue sources.
As part of this plan, Sanday mentioned the formation of board sub-committees to manage specific projects that have been approved, with announcements expected in early 2025. He intends to bring in skilled individuals from outside the organization to enhance these committees, aiming to broaden revenue opportunities and undertake capital projects.
Moreover, Sanday acknowledged the need for a dedicated players’ association. This association would advocate for the interests of the players, fostering better outcomes for the athletes and ensuring their voices are heard within the FRU. It is expected that a Fiji Rugby Players Association will be established, with representation on the FRU board.
To align the organization with global standards, the board will also assess the current staff and structure of the FRU, ensuring the right capabilities are in place to elevate Fiji Rugby to tier one status.
This commitment to restructuring and growth within Fiji Rugby can inspire both players and fans, showcasing a proactive approach to achieving excellence in the sport. The foundation laid by these initiatives could foster a brighter future for rugby in Fiji.
In summary, the FRU’s new direction emphasizes financial stabilization, governance improvement, and enhanced player representation, setting the stage for potential rugby greatness on an international level.
