The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is planning to create a robust business strategy to bolster the Flying Fijians’ chances of winning a Rugby World Cup title. John Sanday, Chairman of the Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), which oversees the operational aspects of FRU, emphasized the importance of a solid financial foundation during an interview with FijiNIKUA magazine.
Sanday highlighted that despite limited resources, Fiji has showcased immense talent by reaching the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals three times. Reflecting on his own experience as a player in Fiji’s inaugural World Cup quarterfinal, he reminisced about the team’s intrinsic qualities: talent, fitness, determination, and national pride.
“Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup,” he stated, stressing the necessity of transitioning from relying on basic resources to establishing a strong business model that can facilitate this ambition. He plans to stabilize and enhance FRU’s finances, improve governance, and increase revenue streams by adhering to fundamental corporate principles.
To implement these strategies, Sanday announced the upcoming formation of board sub-committees tasked with managing specific projects, with plans to announce these initiatives in early 2025. The aim is to involve skilled individuals from beyond the organization to broaden the revenue base and undertake capital projects.
Additionally, Sanday recognized the need for a rugby players’ association to advocate for player interests with the FRU, which should lead to improved outcomes for the athletes. This association will also have representation on the FRU board.
Furthermore, the board will undertake a review of the staff and operational structure of the FRU to align capabilities with the evolving demands of global rugby. This will be essential in elevating Fiji Rugby to tier-one status.
This initiative represents a hopeful chapter for Fijian rugby, indicating a commitment to not only develop the talent of the players but also ensure that the organization functions smoothly to support their aspirations on the international stage. The establishment of a strong business model and support systems can foster a sustainable and competitive environment for future generations of rugby players in Fiji.
In summary, through strategic planning and a focus on governance and revenue generation, the FRU aims to realize its dream of winning a Rugby World Cup, showcasing Fiji’s potential on the global rugby stage.
