The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is being encouraged to develop a comprehensive business plan to enhance the chances of the Flying Fijians team winning a Rugby World Cup title. In an interview with FijiNikua magazine, Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL) chairman John Sanday emphasized the need for strategic planning, noting that despite the limited resources, Fiji’s national XVs team has successfully reached the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup three times.

Drawing from his own experience as a member of Fiji’s first World Cup quarterfinal team, Sanday highlighted the importance of talent, fitness, and passion in achieving success. He conveyed a clear ambition: “Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup.” To accomplish this, he stressed the necessity of transitioning from minimalistic approaches to a robust business framework that would strengthen the financial health of the FRU and increase revenue streams.

Sanday’s strategy includes the establishment of board sub-committees to oversee specific projects, which are expected to be announced in early 2025. He also pointed out the need for a players’ association to ensure that athletes have a voice in discussions with the FRU, thereby improving player welfare and overall outcomes.

Additionally, the FRU board is set to undergo a review of its current structure and staffing to keep pace with global rugby trends and ensure that the organization has the necessary skills to elevate Fiji Rugby to a tier one status.

This initiative is a hopeful indication that the FRU is committed to fostering a brighter future for Fijian rugby, focusing on sustainability, growth, and player representation. With solid governance and a structured approach, the ambition to claim a Rugby World Cup title may well become a reality.

Overall, this new direction underlines a positive commitment to develop the sport in Fiji, leveraging existing talent and enhancing organizational capabilities for greater success on the international stage.
