Peni Ravai, a senior prop for Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, emphasizes the significance of the growing academy program in shaping the future of Fiji Rugby. He believes this initiative is crucial in providing young athletes with the opportunity to seamlessly transition into positions left by older players as they near retirement.
During a training session that included academy players, Ravai articulated how training alongside seasoned professionals equips young talents with the skills needed for high-level rugby. He reflected on his experiences, noting that when he was in high school, such structured opportunities weren’t available to him. Although he participated in Fiji’s Under-20 team, he regrets the lack of access to a formal academy program, which he feels could have vastly improved his development as a player.
“Back in my days, I played in the U20s in Fiji, but I wish I had joined this kind of academy; I would have improved a lot now,” Ravai remarked. He sees the current system as a beneficial experience for younger players, allowing them to learn, gain experience, and build confidence while working with senior athletes.
Having returned to Fiji after playing overseas, Ravai is eager to share his insights with the upcoming generation. He notes that academies are a hallmark of elite rugby nations, essential for the sustained growth and continuity of teams. The most significant advantage, he believes, is the assurance that capable young players will be ready to transition into senior roles as veterans retire.
Ravai pointed out past challenges faced by Fiji Rugby, such as substantial gaps left by retiring stars like Campese Ma’afu. He is optimistic that the academy system now in place will help mitigate these issues for both the Drua and the Flying Fijians. With young players being prepped in advance, Ravai is confident that Fiji Rugby is on a promising path.
“Our generation can retire knowing there’s a young one ready to take our place. That’s one key thing that makes me happy about Fiji Rugby,” Ravai stated, encapsulating his hopeful outlook for the sport’s future in the country.
