The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has successfully wrapped up its Annual General Meeting (AGM), marking a significant transition as new board members take over governance and operational responsibilities. This change comes after the outgoing Trustees, which included Peter Mazey, Jenny Setto, Sikeli Tuinamuana, Alipate Naiorosui, and Mosese Naivalu, completed a transformative term that revitalized the FRU during challenging times.

Under the leadership of the outgoing Trustees, the FRU accomplished a series of remarkable milestones:

– **New Constitution**: A revised constitution was adopted, promoting transparency and governance that aligns with global standards.

– **World Rugby Council Representation**: Fiji’s representation on the World Rugby Council has elevated its standing in the rugby community, allowing it to influence important decisions.

– **Operational Restructure**: A new operational framework was established, including appointing a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) directly accountable to the Board, enhancing strategic alignment and responsibility.

– **Financial Recovery**: In a noteworthy turnaround, the FRU reported a profit of FJD 1.6 million in 2023, a stark contrast to the FJD 1.5 million loss recorded in 2022.

– **Debt Settlement**: The FRU successfully cleared significant debts, including repaying a FJD 2.7 million loan from World Rugby, paving the way for sustainable growth.

The outgoing Trustees expressed pride in the advancements made and acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the FRU staff, members, and partners. As they hand over the reins, they believe Fiji Rugby is now poised for future successes.

Peter Mazey remarked, “To achieve the goals set before us we had to review, investigate and address past issues to enable us to move to a new and bright future.” He emphasized the inclusivity of their approach, stating they listened to players, unions, stakeholders, politicians, and critics, ensuring that the hard work of all involved lays a solid foundation for future growth.

The newly elected board members, who will guide the next steps for Fiji Rugby, include:

– Mosese Naivalu – Legal Director
– John Sanday – Commercial Director
– Tevita Tuiloa – Commercial Director
– Cathy Wong – Women’s Director
– Koli Sewabu – Rugby Director
– Conway Beg – Rugby Director

The new board’s focus will be on nurturing talent, enhancing national team performance, and expanding the sport’s reach within Fiji and beyond. As they embark on this new chapter, the Trustees, staff, and members remain dedicated to establishing a legacy that future generations can cherish.

This transition comes at a pivotal time, with a renewed focus on excellence in Fiji Rugby, which promises to inspire players and fans alike. With a committed leadership team and a solid track record, the future appears bright for Fiji Rugby.

The clear commitment to building on this foundation is a hopeful sign that Fijian rugby will continue to flourish and make its mark on the international stage.
