The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has officially regained its position on the World Rugby Council. This announcement was made by Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, during an interview where he discussed various topics, including Deans Rugby, with Minister of Education Aseri Radrodro. Saukuru confirmed the reinstatement, stating, “The good news is that we have been reinstated in the board of World Rugby. I received the news yesterday (Thursday) that we have been reinstated.”
The FRU faced suspension from the World Rugby Council in May 2023 due to governance issues, including the illegal operation of its board, which also resulted in the loss of its voting rights. In response to the suspension, World Rugby, alongside the FRU, the Fijian government, and FASANOC, collaborated to create a roadmap aimed at stabilizing operations and ensuring Fiji’s participation in major rugby events while addressing broader governance concerns over time.
A significant milestone was achieved on July 1, 2024, when the FRU passed its constitution and unanimously approved a new governance structure during a Special General Meeting held at Novotel in Lami. This development was crucial for the interim board of trustees and all major unions affiliated with Rugby House in their efforts to restore Fiji’s place in the World Rugby Council.
FRU interim chair, Peter Mazey, noted, “We had a very favorable meeting with World Rugby in Paris and that we are awaiting the formal notice from World Rugby.” The revamped organizational structure of Fiji Rugby now includes the Fiji Rugby Football Union Charity Trust, which oversees its commercial and operational arms.
A new management company, Fiji Rugby Union Pte Ltd, will be established, responsible for the governance, board of directors, and operations of Rugby House. Additionally, the FRU holds a 49 percent stake in Counter Ruck Pte Ltd, the owner of the Fijian Drua franchise.
The next step for the FRU is to convene its annual general meeting.
