The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is set to implement a comprehensive business strategy aimed at elevating the Flying Fijians toward a potential Rugby World Cup victory. In a recent interview with FijiNikua magazine, Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL) chairman John Sanday emphasized the importance of a solid operational framework to support the team’s aspirations for greatness.

Sanday reflected on Fiji’s rich rugby talent, citing the national side’s success in reaching three Rugby World Cup quarterfinals despite limited resources. Drawing from his own experience as part of Fiji’s first World Cup quarterfinal team, he recalled the attributes that drove their performance, including raw talent, fitness, determination, and a passion for their nation.

“Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup,” Sanday stated during the launch of FijiNIKUA’s December edition at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. He emphasized the need to transition from minimal resources to a sustainable financial base that can underpin the quest for a Rugby World Cup trophy.

To realize this vision, Sanday highlighted the necessity of stabilizing the finances of the FRU, optimizing its operations, and enhancing governance. He plans to establish sub-committees with specific charters that will focus on various approved projects, with announcements expected in early 2025. This strategic approach includes expanding revenue streams and developing capital projects.

In addition, Sanday acknowledged the need for a player’s association that will represent the interests of rugby athletes. This initiative will contribute to better outcomes for players and ensure a voice within the FRU, with provisions for a nominee from the association to become part of the board.

Furthermore, the FRU board is committed to reviewing its current staff and organizational structure to align with international standards and the evolving landscape of global rugby, ultimately aiming for Fiji to reach tier one status in the sport.

This proactive approach to reform and development within Fiji Rugby signals hope for the future, paving a path towards potentially achieving the long-standing dream of winning the Rugby World Cup. With a focus on solidifying financial foundations and enhancing support systems, the vision for Fiji Rugby looks promising.

Summary: The Fiji Rugby Union plans to establish a robust business strategy to support the Flying Fijians in their quest for a Rugby World Cup title. Chairman John Sanday discusses the importance of strengthening governance, stabilizing finances, and creating a player’s association to represent athlete interests. The initiative aims to elevate Fiji Rugby toward tier one status, fostering a hopeful outlook for future success.
