The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is embarking on the critical task of formulating a robust business strategy aimed at guiding the Flying Fijians team toward clinching a Rugby World Cup title. In a recent interview with FijiNikua magazine, Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL) chairman John Sanday emphasized the potential for success, given that the national XV’s side has reached the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals three times with limited resources.

Reflecting on the past, Sanday, a former member of the Flying Fijians squad that made history by reaching Fiji’s first World Cup quarterfinal, highlighted the team’s core attributes: talent, fitness, perseverance, and a deep love for Fiji. He stated, “Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup,” and outlined the necessity of moving from minimal resource management to establishing a solid financial foundation that would support this ambition.

To achieve this, Sanday pointed out the importance of stabilizing the FRU’s finances, restructuring the organization, and enhancing governance. Building a comprehensive work agenda focused on expanding revenue streams is crucial for the FRU’s future. As part of this plan, board sub-committees will be created to manage specific projects, with announcements expected in early 2025.

Additionally, Sanday recognized the need for a players’ association within Fiji Rugby, which would ensure that the voices of the players are heard and their interests represented. The formation of the Fiji Rugby Players Association is anticipated, and it is expected that a representative from this body will have a seat on the board.

To stay competitive in the evolving global rugby landscape, the FRU board will also evaluate the current staff and organizational structure to align their capabilities with the skills required to elevate Fiji Rugby to tier one status.

As Fiji continues to harness its talent and passion for rugby, the commitment to building a strong business framework and advocating for player representation offers a promising foundation for future success in international competitions. This strategic move is not just about winning; it embodies a vision for sustainability and growth within Fiji Rugby.
