The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is on a mission to develop a robust business plan aimed at helping the Flying Fijians secure a Rugby World Cup title. FRU’s operational company, Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), chaired by John Sanday, emphasizes the need for a strategic approach in building a solid financial foundation for the team.
In a recent interview with FijiNikua magazine, Sanday highlighted that Fijian talent has already led the national XV side to three Rugby World Cup quarterfinals, despite limited resources. He recalls being part of the Flying Fijian team during its inaugural quarterfinal run, noting that success came from sheer talent, fitness, determination, and a deep love for the country.
Sanday stated, “Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup,” during the December edition launch of FijiNIKUA at the Grand Pacific Hotel. He articulated the necessity for the FRU to transition from relying on basic resources to establishing a substantial business foundation to achieve that victory.
His plan involves stabilizing the finances of FRU, optimizing its size, enhancing governance, and creating a revenue-generating agenda. He mentioned the formation of board sub-committees to oversee specific projects with approved implementation slated to be announced in early 2025. Good candidates from outside the organization will be brought in to enhance these committees.
Additionally, Sanday affirmed the need for a rugby players’ association, which would advocate for players’ interests to improve outcomes within the FRU. This association is anticipated to include a representative who would join the board.
To align with the evolving demands of global rugby, Sanday also indicated that the FRU board would reassess its staff and structure, ensuring that current capabilities meet the requirements to elevate Fiji Rugby to a tier-one status.
As Fiji continues its journey in the world of rugby, the establishment of a comprehensive business strategy and support for players signifies a hopeful outlook for future successes, potentially putting the nation closer to achieving its World Cup aspirations.
This initiative also reflects a broader understanding of the importance of professionalizing sports management, which is crucial for fostering talent and competitiveness on a global scale.
