Talks are currently in progress between the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and selected landowners regarding the potential leasing of land for the development of sports infrastructure. This discussion was highlighted by FRU board chairman John Sanday during the recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Novotel Suva Lami Bay.
Sanday emphasized the ongoing challenges that the FRU faces in hosting domestic competitions during the rugby season, particularly the shortage of accredited and appropriately sized grounds. He stated, “The availability of good accredited and proper sized grounds is the biggest concern.” The inability to hold provincial games and competitions like the Vanua Cup and Ranadi due to ground limitations has driven the FRU to explore options to secure available lands for long-term leases and infrastructure development.
Acknowledging that nearly all Fijians are landowners, Sanday expressed optimism about collaborating with landowners to unlock potential lands for sports development. Plans include the establishment of development centers for high-performance rugby academies, especially in the Western and Northern divisions, alongside creating micro-centers in key strategic areas.
Financing these initiatives remains a crucial topic as Sanday noted the necessity of addressing funding challenges, insisting that while the journey may be lengthy, resilience will lead to improvement in Fiji’s rugby infrastructure.
During the AGM, Sanday also mentioned an upcoming rugby symposium scheduled for August 25-30, which will feature both regional and international speakers discussing critical topics within the sport. The insights and findings from these discussions are expected to contribute to the FRU’s strategic planning for the next decade.
Adapting to challenges and aiming towards a sustainable future, the FRU’s initiatives signify a vital step in enhancing rugby in Fiji, showcasing a commitment to not only meet current needs but also foster a vibrant sporting environment that benefits players and fans alike. Through constructive criticism and collective action, Sanday encourages continued support for rugby’s development in the region.
This proactive approach highlights the FRU’s determination to improve and solidify the future of rugby in Fiji, fostering a hopeful outlook toward a thriving rugby culture that aligns well with the country’s rich sporting heritage.
