Koli Sewabu has been appointed as the acting chief executive officer of the Fiji Rugby Union, stepping into his role following the resignation of Rovereto Nayacalevu. With a focus on upcoming changes in his six-month tenure, Sewabu aims to address necessary adjustments within the organization amid shifting trends in global rugby.
He acknowledges the evolution taking place in both the men’s and women’s rugby formats, particularly with the Women’s Rugby World Cup looming just three months away. “A lot of changes are coming up; we all know that sevens is going through changes… we need to adjust and analyze,” Sewabu stated, emphasizing the importance of reflection on training programs and performance metrics.
Sewabu’s immediate focus will be on bolstering the women’s rugby program to ensure comprehensive preparation ahead of the World Cup. He has asserted that the organization must provide strong support for the women’s team, which is his top priority at present.
The Fiji Rugby Union board has been actively reviewing its past operations to pinpoint challenges, especially those affecting the high-performance sector. Sewabu mentioned, “The board has been looking at the background for the past few months to try and identify what the problems are.”
Having previously served as a director and a representative for Fiji’s national 15s team, Sewabu brings valuable experience to his new role. His optimistic outlook is reinforced by ongoing developments within the FRU, which has seen organizational changes aimed at creating a sustainable and effective foundation for the sport’s growth.
This transitional period signals hope for the future of Fiji Rugby, with Sewabu and the board working to foster a strong rugby culture and enhance the performance on the international stage. The proactive approach taken in preparation for significant tournaments like the Women’s Rugby World Cup illustrates a commitment to nurturing talent and promoting success for the upcoming generation of players in Fiji.
