The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has successfully wrapped up its Annual General Meeting (AGM), culminating in a smooth transition of governance to a newly elected board of directors. This marks a significant turning point for Fiji rugby, as the outgoing Trustees, led by Peter Mazey, handed over their responsibilities after a fruitful tenure that saw the organization undertake major reforms.
During their time in office, the FRU Trustees guided the union through substantial restructuring and revitalization. Their leadership resulted in several significant accomplishments:
– The establishment of a new FRU Constitution that fosters transparency and aligns with global governance standards.
– Gaining a seat on the World Rugby Council, thereby enhancing Fiji’s prominence and influence in international rugby matters, allowing the nation to have a voice in critical decisions.
– A transformative operational revamp, which included appointing a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) responsible directly to the Board, thus improving accountability and strategic management.
– Financial improvement, with a profit of FJD 1.6 million in 2023, a remarkable recovery from a loss of FJD 1.5 million the previous year.
– The elimination of old debts, including the repayment of a FJD 2.7 million World Rugby loan, paving the way for long-term financial sustainability.
The Trustees expressed great pride in the strides achieved during their leadership, crediting the collective efforts of staff, stakeholders, and partners. As they transition to the new board members, they express confidence that the foundations laid will foster future success for Fiji rugby.
“In order to meet our objectives, we had to assess and address previous issues to pave the way for a brighter future,” Mazey remarked. He emphasized the importance of engaging with various stakeholders including players, unions, politicians, and critics to ensure the sport’s growth.
The new board members include:
– Mosese Naivalu – Legal Director
– John Sanday – Commercial Director
– Tevita Tuiloa – Commercial Director
– Cathy Wong – Women’s Director
– Koli Sewabu – Rugby Director
– Conway Beg – Rugby Director
These new leaders will steer the FRU towards further talent development, improving the performance of national teams, and enhancing the sport’s popularity both locally and internationally.
As the FRU enters this promising new phase, it remains committed to establishing a legacy that Fijian rugby athletes and enthusiasts will cherish for generations to come.
This transition not only signifies a fresh start but also reinforces Fiji rugby’s potential for growth and excellence in the global arena. As the sport continues to flourish, the collective passion for rugby in Fiji presents a bright outlook for its future.
