The outgoing board of Trustees, consisting of Peter Mazey, Jenny Setto, Sikeli Tuinamuana, Alipate Naiorosui, and Mosese Naivalu, has handed over governance and operational responsibilities, ushering in an optimistic new era for rugby in Fiji.

During their term, the Trustees facilitated a significant transformation within the FRU, focusing on financial stability and operational restructuring. Their key achievements include:

– **Updated FRU Constitution**: A new constitution has been established to promote transparency and adapt to global best practices in governance.
– **Representation on the World Rugby Council**: This milestone enhances Fiji’s global presence in rugby, allowing for a direct voice in crucial international discussions.
– **Operational Improvements**: Structural changes, including the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reporting to the Board, have bolstered organizational accountability.
– **Financial Recovery**: In a remarkable turnaround, the FRU recorded a profit of FJD 1.6 million in 2023, a substantial recovery from a loss of FJD 1.5 million the prior year.
– **Debt Resolution**: The Trustees successfully eliminated significant debts, including a FJD 2.7 million loan from World Rugby, ensuring long-term viability.

The outgoing Trustees expressed their pride in the advancements achieved during their service, attributing success to the dedication of FRU staff, members, and partners. They believe that Fiji Rugby is established on a solid foundation for future progress.

“Our proactive approach included listening to players, unions, stakeholders, and even critics,” stated Mazey. “The joint efforts have established a bright future for Fiji Rugby, and we eagerly anticipate the contributions of the new board. The passion for rugby in Fiji is unparalleled, and we are optimistic that the sport will continue to prosper at every level.”

The newly elected board includes key figures such as Mosese Naivalu as Legal Director, John Sanday and Tevita Tuiloa as Commercial Directors, along with Cathy Wong for Women’s Director, and Koli Sewabu and Conway Beg as Rugby Directors. This new team is set to guide the future trajectory of Fiji Rugby, focusing on talent development and the enhancement of national team performance.

As the FRU enters this promising phase, the commitment to building a legacy that future generations can take pride in remains unwavering among the Trustees, staff, and members. The journey ahead appears bright, with the potential for continued excellence within Fiji’s rugby landscape.

In summary, the FRU’s leadership transition at the AGM signifies a hopeful new chapter for rugby in Fiji, driven by a proactive and committed team dedicated to fostering the sport’s growth both locally and internationally.
