The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) today, officially transitioning governance and operational responsibilities to a newly elected board. This significant milestone marks the end of a transformative period overseen by the previous board of trustees—Peter Mazey, Jenny Setto, Sikeli Tuinamuana, Alipate Naiorosui, and Mosese Naivalu—and the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Fiji rugby.
The outgoing Trustees successfully navigated a period of substantial restructuring and revitalization for the FRU. Their tenure is highlighted by several significant achievements, including:
1. The introduction of a new FRU Constitution, which modernizes the governance framework and aligns with global best practices to enhance transparency.
2. Securing a seat on the World Rugby Council, amplifying Fiji’s stature and influence within the international rugby community.
3. Implementing a major operational overhaul, which features a new structure with a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reporting directly to the Board, thereby improving accountability in decision-making.
4. Achieving a financial turnaround with a profit of FJD 1.6 million in 2023, a striking recovery from a loss of FJD 1.5 million in the previous year.
5. Clearing historic debts, including a World Rugby loan repayment of FJD 2.7 million, setting the FRU on a path toward sustainable operations.
The outgoing Trustees expressed their pride in the progress made and recognized the collective effort from FRU staff, members, and partners. As they transition leadership to the newly elected board members, they feel confident about the future of Fiji Rugby.
Peter Mazey, the former chair, emphasized the importance of addressing past challenges to pave the way for a promising future. The collaborative stance toward feedback from players, unions, and stakeholders was also highlighted as a crucial aspect of their proactive approach.
The new board, including Mosese Naivalu (Legal Director), John Sanday and Tevita Tuiloa (both Commercial Directors), Cathy Wong (Women’s Director), and Koli Sewabu and Conway Beg (both Rugby Directors), will focus on guiding Fiji Rugby’s development, enhancing national team performance, and fostering further growth for the sport.
As the FRU steps into this new phase, all involved are dedicated to building a legacy that future generations of Fijian rugby enthusiasts can cherish.
This transition not only symbolizes a fresh start but also signals the potential for further achievements in Fijian rugby, a sport deeply embedded in the nation’s culture and identity. The hope and dedication of all stakeholders set the stage for a bright future, reinforcing the passion for rugby in Fiji and its continued thriving at both local and international levels.
The announcement concludes with a commitment to excellence, aiming to inspire future generations of players and fans passionate about Fijian rugby.
