Fiji Rugby Union Undergoes Structural Change, Removes Prime Minister’s Nomination in Board Elections

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has implemented a structural change that eliminates the board’s Prime Minister nomination, a decision that is expected to cause controversy. Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, expressed his disapproval for the change and is looking for commentary from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

This modification was officially approved at the Saturday’s Special General Meeting hosted at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay Convention Centre. FRU interim Trustees chairman Peter Mazey emphasized the need for professional management of rugby operations, extending from the board level to CEO.

He stated that elections for a new board of directors and chairman would be held at the upcoming annual general meeting. He explained that the new structure revolves around the unions, as they would be nominating and voting for their representatives in each position. The new model eschews a government or Prime Minister nominee as well as a patron and president for the FRU.

Mazey confirmed that all union members unanimously endorsed the proposed structural adjustments.
