Fiji Rugby Union Triumphs with World Council Reinstatement

The Fiji Rugby Union has been reinstated as a member of the World Rugby Council. This decision follows a meeting of the World Rugby Executive Board in late July, during which they assessed a report from the Fiji Oversight Committee.

The report highlighted that the FRU successfully conducted a Special General Meeting, where members unanimously approved a new constitution and governance structure. This progress is regarded as a crucial step towards enhancing transparency, accountability, and robust leadership within Fiji Rugby.

FRU Chairman Peter Mazey expressed gratitude for the backing from World Rugby and the dedication demonstrated by stakeholders. He remarked, “The adoption of our new constitution and governance framework reflects our commitment to advancing Fiji Rugby. This reinstatement is a win not only for our Union but also for all our players, coaches, and supporters who have remained loyal during this period.”

Mazey further stated that the reinstatement would enable Fiji Rugby to fortify its connections within the global rugby community and further its mission to promote the sport in Fiji. Following this development, the FRU will be in a position to nominate a representative to the World Rugby Council, who will have to undergo a vetting process in accordance with the World Rugby Integrity Code before assuming their role.

World Rugby also acknowledged the efforts of Fiji Oversight Committee members Dr. Robin Mitchell and Cathy Wong for their contributions in assisting the FRU in achieving this favorable outcome. The FRU has reaffirmed its commitment to uphold the principles and standards established by World Rugby.
