The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is expected to announce the new head coaches for the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams within this week, as confirmed by FRU’s chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu. He revealed that offers have been extended to several interested candidates and they are currently awaiting their responses.

Notably, Waisale Serevi, regarded as a rugby sevens legend, has expressed interest in the Fijiana 7s coaching position. His previous coaching experience includes a stint with the Indian Women’s 7s team. Additionally, former player Sireli Bobo is rumored to be in the running for a coaching role, although Nayacalevu has withheld the names of all applicants for now.

Serevi will be collaborating with Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council coaching team to assist in preparing the Under-20 7s squad for upcoming competitions. Recently, Serevi was appointed as the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, further solidifying his involvement in the rugby community.

The vacancy for the Fijiana 15s head coach arose following the departure of Mosese Rauluni last October. Rauluni had an impressive record, leading the team to victory in the Oceania Championship and securing qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. The challenge for the new coach will be significant, as filling Rauluni’s position is described as “big shoes to fill.”

Furthermore, the Fijiana 7s head coach position has been vacant since Saiasi Fuli’s contract was not renewed in December. Fuli’s tenure spanned five years, during which he led the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and contributed significantly to their development.

Nayacalevu emphasized that the aim is to select the best candidates who can bring significant improvements to the teams’ performances and results. This transition in coaching is viewed positively as it signifies ongoing efforts by the FRU to strengthen women’s rugby in Fiji, build on past successes, and provide fresh leadership that can inspire the next generation of players.

Overall, the anticipated announcements are generating a sense of optimism for the future of Fijian rugby, as the FRU seeks to enhance team performance through the selection of experienced and passionate coaches.
