The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) have formed an innovative four-year partnership with the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) to enhance road safety across the nation. This collaboration is designed to reduce the incidence of road accidents and fatalities in Fiji.
LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted the significance of this initiative in promoting adherence to traffic regulations and road safety among all Fijian road users. By utilizing the popularity and influence of rugby alongside FRU’s extensive platform, they aim to foster a sense of responsibility and awareness regarding road safety within local communities.
“This unique partnership showcases the vital role that sports, especially rugby, play in influencing societal attitudes in Fiji,” Rokosawa remarked during the agreement signing with FRU. He noted that rugby players, being widely respected figures, are perfectly positioned to advocate for responsible road use.
ACCF Executive Chairman Maritino Nemani echoed this sentiment, emphasizing a shared commitment among the partners to prioritize road safety. Their collective efforts aim to cultivate a culture of care and responsibility on the roads, addressing the pressing issues of reckless driving and pedestrian negligence that have plagued the country.
FRU General Manager Avnil Pratap expressed his organization’s pride in backing this essential cause, reaffirming FRU’s dedication to the health and safety of Fijians both on and off the rugby field. He spoke of the impactful role rugby players can play as community role models, whose voices can motivate positive behaviors and encourage road safety.
The partnership aligns with LTA’s overarching strategy of collaborating with corporate entities that are committed to the vision of making roads safer for all Fijians. As the nation continues to face the challenges associated with unsafe driving practices, this initiative holds promising potential in instilling long-term change and improvement in road safety culture.
This collaboration serves as a hopeful reminder of the positive impacts that can be achieved when major organizations unite for a common cause. The involvement of popular sports figures may lead to a significant shift in public attitudes towards road safety, benefiting communities across Fiji.
