The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has raised concerns regarding compliance issues among its provincial rugby unions in 2025, which are affecting game management and player participation. Chief Executive Officer Koli Sewabu revealed that only two unions, Nadi and Ba, met the FRU’s terms of participation this year.

Sewabu noted that a strict enforcement of compliance could have resulted in the cancellation of games, which would ultimately harm the players and the FRU. He emphasized the need to find practical solutions that allow games to continue without compromising the integrity of the competition. “We gave some leeway and timelines for compliance,” he stated, reflecting on the successful conclusion of the year’s activities.

Further complicating matters are governance and administrative issues within some unions, many of which still operate under outdated constitutions. To address these challenges, Sewabu announced plans for comprehensive audits and inspections in early 2026, which will involve three phases of consultation and training to modernize governance practices. The FRU intends to engage its legal team in reviewing the constitutions of all unions.

Sewabu also mentioned significant financial difficulties faced by the unions, with notable losses recorded in domestic competitions. The FRU is actively working on strategies to improve financial sustainability moving forward. “Our financials indicate losses in our domestic competitions,” he remarked, stressing the necessity for a new strategic plan that promotes governance, commercial viability, and operational excellence.

This strategic initiative aims to enhance collaboration with unions and enforce stricter compliance to preemptively address historical issues. Sewabu expressed a positive outlook for Fijian rugby, stating that they are better prepared for the future. “Moving forward, we are looking forward to the blessings and opportunities that 2026 is bringing,” he added.

As Fiji Rugby looks to this new chapter, the emphasis will be on strengthening governance and establishing a sustainable financial framework that supports players, unions, and the overall growth of the sport across the nation.
