The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is set to reveal the new head coaches for the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams this week. This announcement was confirmed by FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu, who stated that offers have been made to interested candidates, and they are currently awaiting their responses.
Noteworthy among the applicants is Waisale Serevi, a rugby sevens legend known for his remarkable coaching experience, including a recent role with the Indian Women’s 7s team. Former player Sireli Bobo is also in consideration for a coaching role. Nayacalevu refrained from disclosing the names of all the applicants, emphasizing a focus on securing the best coaching talents to enhance performance.
Serevi is expected to collaborate with Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council coaching staff in preparing the Under-20 7s squad, which reflects a commitment to nurturing young talent in Fijian rugby. Recently, Serevi was named the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, further solidifying his ties within the rugby community.
The coaching role for the Fijiana 15s team became vacant following the departure of Mosese Rauluni in October 2023. Rauluni led the team to significant achievements, including a win at the Oceania Championship and securing qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup, marking a substantial legacy for his successor to uphold.
Similarly, the Fijiana 7s coaching position has been unfilled since Saiasi Fuli’s contract was not renewed in December after five impressive years, during which Fuli guided the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
This period of transition is crucial for the continued development of women’s rugby in Fiji, and Nayacalevu expressed optimism regarding the selection of capable coaches who will inspire the teams and ensure they perform at their best on the international stage.
