The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is preparing to unveil new head coaches for both the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams this week, as confirmed by FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu. This announcement follows the successful solicitation of applications from potential candidates, with offers already extended and responses anticipated shortly.
Among the notable applicants is Waisale Serevi, a legendary figure in sevens rugby who has previously coached the Indian Women’s 7s team. Serevi’s involvement is particularly exciting as he will also assist former player Sireli Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) coaching team in preparing the Under-20 7s squad. His recent appointment as the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water highlights his continued influence and commitment to the sport.
The need for new coaches arises following the departure of Mosese Rauluni from the Fijiana 15s position last October. Rauluni played a pivotal role in leading the team to victory in the Oceania Championship and qualifying for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. His successor will face a significant challenge in continuing this impressive trajectory. The Fijiana 7s head coaching role has also been vacant since Saiasi Fuli’s contract was not renewed in December after a successful five-year run that included a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
This transitional phase for the Fijiana teams represents a crucial opportunity for growth and new strategies that can enhance Fiji’s standing in women’s rugby on the global stage. Nayacalevu emphasized the FRU’s commitment to selecting the most effective coaches to improve team performance and drive results in future international competitions.
As these announcements approach, there is a growing sense of optimism within the Fijian rugby community. The upcoming appointments are expected to not only strengthen the teams but also inspire the next generation of athletes, setting the stage for continued success in Fijian rugby. With a focus on both senior and youth talent development, the FRU is poised to create a bright future for women’s rugby in Fiji.
