The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is set to announce new head coaches for both the Fijiana 7s and Fijiana 15s teams this week, as confirmed by FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu. Offers have been extended to interested candidates, and the FRU is eagerly awaiting their responses.
Notably, Waisale Serevi, a legendary figure in rugby sevens, has expressed interest in the Fijiana 7s head coaching position, bringing a wealth of experience from his previous role with the Indian Women’s 7s team. Former player Sireli Bobo has also been mentioned as a potential candidate, though Nayacalevu has remained tight-lipped about other applicants.
Serevi is poised to collaborate with Bobo alongside the Fiji Sports Council coaching staff to assist in preparing the Under-20 7s squad. This initiative not only reinforces the development of younger players but also symbolizes the FRU’s commitment to nurturing future talent in Fijian rugby. Recently, Serevi was named the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, which further emphasizes his ongoing contribution to the rugby community.
The search for new coaches follows the departure of Mosese Rauluni from the Fijiana 15s position last October. Rauluni had a significant influence on the team, leading them to victory in the Oceania Championship and securing qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. His successor will inherit substantial expectations, particularly after his success, which includes the historic win over Japan.
Additionally, the Fijiana 7s coaching position became vacant when Saiasi Fuli’s contract was not renewed in December 2023. Fuli’s five-year tenure was marked by major accomplishments, including coaching the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
As the FRU prepares to make these crucial announcements, there’s a growing sense of optimism within the Fijian rugby community. The appointment of experienced coaches promises to build upon previous successes and guide the teams towards greater achievements on the international stage, inspiring both current players and emerging talent for the future.
This transition period is viewed positively, reflecting the FRU’s dedication to enhancing performance and fostering leadership within women’s rugby in Fiji. The anticipation surrounding the announcements showcases the community’s hope for a successful future in the sport.
