The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is set to announce new head coaches for the Fijiana women’s rugby teams, both the 7s and 15s, within this week. This confirmation came from FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu on Saturday, who mentioned that offers have been sent to the interested candidates, and they are awaiting responses.

Among the applicants is renowned US-based rugby sevens legend, Waisale Serevi, who has shown interest in the Fijiana 7s head coaching position. Serevi’s coaching experience includes a recent role with the Indian Women’s 7s team. Former player Sireli Bobo has also been noted by Nayacalevu, though he refrained from naming other contenders for the positions.

Serevi is expected to join Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) coaching team to assist in the preparation of the under-20 7s squad today. He has recently been appointed as the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, showcasing his continued involvement and influence in rugby.

The Fijiana 15s coaching position has been vacant since the departure of Mosese Rauluni, who played a significant role in leading the Fijiana XV team to victory at the Oceania Championship and qualifying for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. His successor will face the challenge of filling his large shoes.

On the other hand, the Fijiana 7s head coaching role has been vacant since Saiasi Fuli’s contract ended in December. Fuli had notable achievements during his five years, including coaching the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

These coaching announcements represent a pivotal moment for the Fijiana teams, and Nayacalevu emphasized the goal of these appointments: to enhance the teams’ performance and drive improvement in results.

This transitional period opens up opportunities for fresh leadership and strategic directions that can enhance Fiji’s position in women’s rugby on an international level. As the FRU moves forward, there’s optimism within the community that the right candidates will be chosen to lead the teams and inspire the next generation of Fijiana rugby players.
