Today marks an important event for the Fiji Rugby Union as they hold their annual general meeting at the Novotel in Lami. One of the key issues on the agenda is the potential appointment of former Fijiana captain Lailanie Burnes as an incoming Rugby Director. This move would fulfill the requirement of having at least two female directors within the board.
Fiji Rugby Union board chairman John Sanday expressed enthusiasm for Burnes’ election, highlighting her extensive experience and contributions to rugby. He emphasized that her achievements in the sport make her a strong candidate for the board position. Burnes was nominated by Nadi Rugby Union and seconded by the Yasawa Rugby Union, showcasing support from various unions.
In addition to the voting for Burnes, the AGM will cover the approval of audited accounts for the year 2024, along with updates on various projects initiated by the board since their last election. These projects include the establishment of the Fiji Rugby Players Association, which focuses on player welfare, identifying land for a future FRU Stadium, plans for six test matches next year against Tier 1 nations, and the strengthening of local rugby competitions.
The gathering will also address motions presented by other unions, ensuring that all voices are heard in shaping the future of rugby in Fiji. The AGM is set to run from 10 AM to 2 PM, providing ample time for discussions and decision-making.
The anticipated election of Burnes signifies a progressive step for women’s representation in rugby governance in Fiji, and the focus on various projects indicates a commitment to the growth and support of the sport at all levels. As the meeting unfolds, there is hope for a renewed direction for Fiji Rugby, paving the way for enhanced community involvement and a stronger rugby culture in the nation.
