Pawan Deo, a former accountant at the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), and his wife, Subhashni Mudaliar, have pleaded not guilty to multiple fraud-related charges during their recent court appearance at the Suva Magistrate’s Court. The couple, who are the sole proprietors of Sports Supplies Limited (SSL), faces serious allegations including conspiracy to defraud, obtaining financial gain, and unlawfully securing a financial advantage.

The charges arise from claims that between February 1 and July 31, 2022, Deo and Mudaliar conspired to wrongfully receive a total of $53,788.75 from the FRU. Furthermore, they are alleged to have facilitated fraudulent payments to SSL, resulting in an improper gain of $7,291.83, despite knowing the company was ineligible to receive these funds during the period of February 1 to May 11, 2022.

Prosecution attorney Ravinesh Lal confirmed that full disclosure of the evidence was provided to the couple on November 26 of the previous year. Their legal team has indicated intentions to approach the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) to seek a reconsideration of the charges.

Following their plea, the couple’s bail has been extended, and the case has been rescheduled to continue on February 28. This situation highlights significant concerns regarding governance and accountability within organizations that manage public funds, especially in the sports sector, which currently faces intense scrutiny.

This legal proceeding serves as a critical reminder of the importance of transparency and ethical conduct in financial practices within the public sector. The unfolding of this case not only emphasizes accountability for alleged misconduct but also the principle that individuals are innocent until proven guilty. The outcome has the potential to reinforce the need for stringent regulations, ultimately fostering greater trust in financial practices within sporting organizations in Fiji.

In summary, the legal challenges faced by Pawan Deo and Subhashni Mudaliar could lead to important discussions about integrity and ethics in managing resources, contributing positively towards better governance and accountability in sports.
