Fiji Rugby Union Rules Out Player Bonuses for November Tour

The FIJI Water Flying Fijians will not receive any bonuses for winning matches during their November tour, as confirmed by Peter Mazey, the chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union’s interim board. This decision followed a request from one player, made through the players’ welfare association, to implement bonuses for match victories.

Mazey stated, “We do not agree with it; the union supported this law enough is enough.” He emphasized the need for financial prudence, highlighting that the Rugby World Cup campaign cost approximately $11 million, with a significant portion allocated to player expenses. “We all have to live on what we earn and we can’t afford to keep doing this,” he added.

In support of this stance, FRU board member Jenny See-to noted that bonuses traditionally come from government funding, and the union itself lacks sufficient resources to offer such incentives.

This news may cause disappointment among players and fans who view bonuses as an incentive for success. However, it reflects a broader commitment to ensuring the financial sustainability of the rugby union, which is crucial for the development of the sport in Fiji. The focus is now on promoting a team spirit and playing for national pride rather than personal financial gain, which could inspire a renewed sense of purpose and unity within the team.

Ultimately, while bonuses are appealing, the current approach taken by the FRU may contribute to a stronger foundation for future endeavors and encourage the players to view their participation through the lens of national pride.
