Fiji Rugby Union Rejects Player Bonus Requests Amid Financial Strain

The FIJI Water Flying Fijians will not receive any bonuses for match victories during their November tour. This information was confirmed by Peter Mazey, the interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). He shared that a request for bonus payments was made by one player through the players’ welfare association, but the board ultimately decided against it.

Mazey stated, “We do not agree with it; the union supported this law, enough is enough.” He expressed that while bonuses could be considered for significant achievements, such as consistent wins or participation in the Rugby World Cup, the financial situation did not allow for bonuses at this time. He noted that the Rugby World Cup campaign cost the union $11 million, with a significant portion directed towards player expenses.

Additionally, FRU board member Jenny See-to emphasized that bonuses typically rely on government funding, implying that the union lacks the financial resources to independently provide bonuses.

This decision reflects a commitment to fiscal responsibility within the union, prioritizing the long-term sustainability of rugby in Fiji. While the lack of bonuses might be disappointing for players, it highlights a focus on representing the country and building a strong rugby foundation.

In a time when many sports organizations face financial pressures, the FRU’s decision could pave the way for a more stable future, ensuring that the game continues to thrive in Fiji.
